


Thus, the Telugu film industry or Tollywood – largest after the Bollywood in the country – lost second of its two major pillars. The first - N T Rama Rao, a matinee idol and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh died around the same time – January 18 in 1996. While N T Rama Rao became a legend with his mythological characters – Rama, Ravana and Krishna that endeared him to the masses, ANR is known for his social films some of which depicted class, caste differences and ushered in a socio-economic mobility appealing to the educated and the middle classes. He has since, acted in over 255 films, spanning from Telugu and Tamil, to Hindi languages and hence became one of the most prominent figures in the history of Telugu cinema.

Career Highlights: Nageswara Rao made his debut in the Telugu film, Dharmapatni, in 1941, at the age of 17. He also started a film and media school, Annapurna International School of Film and Media within Annapurna Studios in 2011. To provide infrastructural support to the film industry in Hyderabad, he built a film studio, Annapurna Studios, in 1975. He made sure all of his movies were shot in Hyderabad during 1963.
